<image:title>Outreach Activities - Open House Day at Las Cruces Research Station - This year, over 500 visitors joined us. We were thrilled to connect with them again, just as we did last year, and to give back to the community that surrounds and supports our work. We talked about frog communication and reproduction: how frogs call to one another, how they find mates, and why these creatures matter. Many people shared their own stories about frogs they have seen in their backyards and how much they enjoy having them around.</image:title>
<image:caption>The most gratifying part? The kids. So many young visitors came by to tell us why they love frogs. Their excitement and curiosity reminded us why public engagement is so important. It’s a full-day effort, but sharing our science, hearing people’s stories, and inspiring the next generation of nature lovers makes it all worthwhile.</image:caption>

<image:title>Outreach Activities - “Science on Wheels” events - Now, as the Goyes Lab grows and I have transitioned from postdoc to PI, I’m thrilled to see the graduate students in the lab carrying the torch. Last October (2024), Natalia Mejía and Sebastián Curaca participated in SoW’s “Science en Español” event at the Daniel Boone Regional Library in Columbia, MO. They gave a community talk entitled “Ranas: un salto a conocer su importancia” (“Frogs: a leap into understanding their importance”), sharing their research and passion for amphibians with local Spanish-speaking audiences. Engaging with the Hispanic community in CoMO is a meaningful step toward making science inclusive and relevant for all.</image:title>

<image:title>Outreach Activities - Save The Frogs Day - From 2011 to 2016, I had the pleasure of organizing the Save The Frogs Day at UConn in collaboration with the UConn Herpetological Society. Our campus became a hub of frog-focused fun and education. We set up interactive exhibits, posters, games, and displays featuring Connecticut’s local amphibians, teaching students and other community members why we should care for amphibians and what we can do to protect them.</image:title>

<image:title>News - Natalia was awarded the Nana Family Scholarship! - Kudos Natalia!</image:title>
<image:caption>We’re proud to share that Natalia Mejia, a master’s student in our lab, was awarded the Nana Family Scholarship, administered by the Conservation Federation of Missouri. She was recognized during the 89th Annual CFM Convention at their Conservation Awards Ceremony. This scholarship will support Natalia’s field research in Costa Rica this summer, where she will investigate how male frogs alter their calling behavior in response to different social environments. By combining bioacoustics with behavioral ecology, her work will shed light on the complex communication strategies of tropical amphibians. Congratulations, Natalia—we can’t wait to hear what you discover!</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Welcoming our newest Master's students: Sebastian and Natalia! - We’re excited to welcome two new graduate students to the Goyes Lab, starting their Master’s programs in the Fall of 2024! Sebastian Curaca and Natalia Mejia bring strong backgrounds in amphibian research and a shared passion for understanding animal behavior and bioacoustics. Sebastian joins us from Bogotá, Colombia, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from Universidad Nacional. For his undergraduate thesis, he focused on the ecology and taxonomy of poison dart frogs in the genus Hyloxalus, gaining hands-on experience with species identification and natural history in the field. Natalia, originally from Cali, Colombia, completed her Biology degree at Universidad del Valle. Her undergraduate thesis explored the acoustic characteristics of an anuran assemblage in a dry forest of southwestern Colombia, providing valuable insights into frog communication in a biodiversity-rich and understudied ecosystem. We’re thrilled to have these two passionate researchers join the lab, and we can’t wait to see where their projects take them. Stay tuned for updates on their work in and out of the field!</image:title>

While most frogs abandon their eggs, males of L. palavanensis guard their clutches under leaves and even transport tadpoles on their backs to water bodies.</image:title>
